September 2011 - Anomalies in the Economies
Steve recently spoke to a group of interested economists and investors about Anomalies in the Economies and created this handout showing the changing value of the dollar in the currency exchange rates of a sample of countries. If we looked at older graphs we would see that the dollar has generally been losing value (the USA slipping in its status as the richest country) compared to certain strong currency countries such Switzerland, Germany and Japan over the last 30 years. These charts go back to only 2007, but show that decline extending into 2008. Our "subprime mortgage" crisis unfolded largely in October of 2008. What's interesting is that most of the graphs show a sharp spike upward in the value of the dollar in late 2008 / early 2009. Possibly this could be attributed to foreign optimism about the new Obama administration. An alternate explanation would be that our subprime crisis created an echo effect in European and other economies and that scared investors soon moved money to the USA on the theory that "the Americans led us into this, maybe they will the lead us out of it". A important exception is the one major country that did not seem affected and where a decline in the dollar seems to continue (and much has been written about that exchange rate).
